Not This Time Chapter 9: System Failure, a chuck fanfic – FanFiction.Net

It’s not my idea of fun to have a story of mine go in a particularly dark direction. I don’t even like to make my villains all that evil! They mostly turn out to be ordinary people caught up in extraordinary circumstances who make the wrong choice. Outright ‘yes-I’m-evil-and-I’m-proud-of-it’ villainy is a bit dated anyway.
Villains are good for melodrama but not for drama, where the setting and the circumstances create the conflict, rather than some overt action. Villains simplify a story, give it focus, direction. When there’s a destination we think about how to get there. When there’s an evil plot we think about how to defeat it. One doesn’t always triumph against life, sometimes the only thing you can do is grow and develop and learn to cope because there is nothing to be done about it. In St. Martin’s Moon, the curse is the prime mover of the plot, the question is how do you deal with your curse.
When everyone, hero or villain, is subordinated to the dramatic circumstances, you can have your cake and eat it too. Satisfying character development, and someone’s ass getting kicked in the dramatic final confrontation!
